Prof. Dr. Basak Bilecen is Professor in Sociology at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands and Rosalind Franklin fellow. Since 2023, she is the chair of the Dutch Association for Migration Research. In 2022, she was awarded the Karl Arnold Prize by the NRW Academy of Sciences and Arts for her lifetime achievements in migration scholarship. In 2017/2018, she was John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellow at the Center for European Studies, Harvard University.

Her work focuses on international migration, transnationality, social protection, social networks, and social inequalities which appeared in leading international journals including Social Networks, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Population, Space, and Place, and The Gerontologist

Professor Bilecen visited the COALESCE Lab in the spring of 2024, when she and Professor Lubbers worked on the Handbook for International Migration and Social Networks, which will come out in 2026.
